This week has been an amazing blur. After a quick, 2 day trip to Vienna for the Christmas markets, we’re back home for a couple of days before turning around and flying out to California to spend Christmas with family.
While we still have a little work to do, I love spending this quiet period doing a deep dive into organizing my life for 2019. I’ve been walking through the house with a big bin tossing things that we need to get rid of. I’ve been really focusing on cleaning up my digital life using this article as a guide for my phone and this one as a guide for my computer. And after going through a big life planning exercise, we’ve been mapping out some really exciting new things for 2019.
It’s nerdy, but I love all of this. My first newsletter in January is going to go into the process Jordan and I have been quietly going through the past few months to answer the overwhelming “what do I want to do with my life?” question. And I’m so excited to share because the resources that I found have truly made a difference for us.
But today I’m going to share the most read articles from 2018 — both from The Worth Project and other amazing sources. Because you all have read a lot this year.
Before we jump to those: a little favor. I want to get to know you better. So that I can create the best content possible for you. I’d love it if you could take this 2 question survey.
Have a great New Year and I’ll see you back here in 2019.
we’ve got you covered
I’m a little wiser now. There’s so much I wish I could go back and tell my younger self: those chunky highlights are not subtle, eating a bag of chips for dinner will eventually catch up with you, and you really (really) have a lot of free time you can do something with. But there’s also a lot of money advice that I’d tell my 20-something self. Here it is.
Just say no. There are a lot of things you should do with your money. But what about things that you shouldn’t? Here are 5 things that you should avoid doing — and what you should do instead. And it includes the worst advice I’ve ever heard, straight from a financial “expert”.
Sold. Hunting for a house? When Jordan and I bought our first home a few years ago, we did a lot of research. Even so, there are a lot of things I wish we knew before we had closed. Here’s everything we wish we knew plus advice from The Worth Project community.
You do what? For this article, I received some great responses from readers as to how to get the best deals while traveling. Even though I’ve traveled a lot, I hadn’t heard of most that were shared. If you’re planning trips for 2019, here are 13 ways to stretch, save, and hack your way to travel deals. It includes a few of my travel tricks that I’ve learned along the way and the best tips from travel savvy community members.
Get yourself organized. This is how my disorganized self organizes all of our multiple bank accounts.
Make Me Smart
smart-ish reads from around the internet
I wanna be a billionaire so freaking bad. This guy spent 5 years studying the habits of self-made millionaires. He found that are split into two categories: risk takers and savers. While being a risk taker may be an exciting journey to riches, he found that savers have a specific money mindset that got them to their millionaire status. Here are 7 of their top strategies. #6 is a tough one (personally) but I think it’s pretty safe to say I definitely succeeded with #7.
You vs. Future You. I don’t know about you but I think it can be kind of hard to strike a balance between doing something good for today’s you and doing something good for future you. Do we save money or do we book a trip to the Christmas markets in Sweden while we’re living a quick 2-hour flight away? That’s why I love this article from one of my favorite sites: Wait, Buy Why? The author breaks down your life in weeks (in the least depressing way possible) and then gives you a framework to try to reach goals while still enjoying your life.
The best – and most simple – career advice. Like ever. Not sure you’ve found exactly what you want to do in life? I love this very succinct career advice that’s so obvious it almost hurts.
